How should I set up my suspension for Baja and the desert?

By Travis Flateau, TBT Racing · tuning since 1992

Desert and Baja riding needs suspension that stays calm at high speed, holds up in whoops and doesn't bottom on big hits, mile after mile. That usually means the right springs for your loaded weight and valving built for speed and heat.

What we look at

  • Your real weight: in street clothes, plus gear, hydration and anything you carry.
  • Speed and whoops: support so the bike doesn't wallow or kick.
  • Big hits: bottoming control for washouts and G-outs.
  • Heat and miles: fresh oil and seals before a long race or trip.

Before you go

  • Get a full service first.
  • Set your sag with the bike loaded the way you'll ride it.
  • Write down your clicker settings so you can return to base.
